The poet and the Verse

By Tapas Sarkar

Poetry is the core heart of a poet. A good poetry always has beautiful lines or verses. The relationship between a poet and his or her verse is so intimate, innate and true that they can't exist without the other. Without verse a poet is nothing, at the same time without a poet a verse cannot stay alive. Poet's feelings- sad, pathos, joy, enigma, gloomy, nostalgic, epidemic or pandemic , everything is the source of a Poet's poetic voice which is woven in Poetry with beautiful or harsh verses.

Now, to understand the relationship between the poet and verse we have to be clear what Poetry is. The word 'poetry' has derived from the Greek word 'Poiesis' which means 'Making'. Poetry is "literary work in which the expression of feelings and ideas is given intensity by the use of distinctive style and rhythm; poems collectively or as a genre of literature." (from Oxford Languages). Poetry is  "a very beautiful or emotional quality", "poems in general as a form of literature" (from Cambridge Dictionary). So, in a simple way to say about poetry is that poetry is the work of word, verses, (from poet's experience) to make or expose meaning, where a poet is the creator of that meaning. Readers, only can associate their understanding of life with the poet's thinking, and that makes a poem multiple conversant between the poet and the readers. That's why, a poet is who writes poetry(verse) and makes the meaning. On the other hand verse is nothing but assemblage of meaningful words and then pairs of lines by the poet which can be rhymed or unrhymed. Verse is "writing arranged with a metrical rhythm, typically having a rhyme.", " a group of lines that form a unit in a poem or song; a stanza"(from Oxford Languages). "writing that is arranged in short lines with a regular rhythm; poetry", "one of the parts that a poem or song is divided into" (Cambridge Dictionary). The importance of poetry lies on the poet's portrayal of theme through meaningful and beautiful verses.

John Keats says "No man was ever yet a great poet, without being at the same time a profound philosopher. For poetry is the blossom and the fragrancy of all human knowledge, human thoughts, human passions, emotions, language."
